Practicing Science Fiction. Critical Essays on Writing, Reading and Teaching the Genre

Drawn from the Science Fiction Research Association conference held in Lawrence, Kansas, in 2008, the essays in this volume address intersections among the reading, writing, and teaching of science fiction. Part 1 studies the teaching of SF, placing analytical and pedagogical research next to each other to reveal how SF can be both an object of study as well as a teaching tool for other disciplines. Part 2 examines SF as a genre of mediation between the sciences and the humanities, using close readings and analyses of the literary-scientific nexus. Part 3 examines SF in the media, using specific television programs, graphic novels, and films as examples of how SF successfully transcends the medium of transmission. Finally, Part 4 features close readings of SF texts by women, including Joanna Russ, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Octavia E. Butler.

Mohamed BenMhamed Reading/Writing Connections

Throughout the long history of language acquisition in general, and the acquisition of the written medium in particular, different theories have emerged and, consequently, different views to account for and explain the mysteries of written language acquisition have seen light. The understanding and discussion of these theories and views will not only shed light on the essence of writing and its place in the whole process of second language acquisition, but also give more insight into the second language teaching methods these theories advocate, especially composition teaching methods. Accordingly, this book investigated the effect of reading model essays and writing practice on Moroccan EFL students’ persuasive writing performance. The major purpose behind this study was to compare the impact of reading and writing practice on the development of Moroccan students’ argumentative writing performance and shed more light on the reading writing relationship

Sara Mashayekh The effect of teaching critical thinking

Teaching methodology plays a very important role in language learning, and critical teaching, as a method which promotes learners’ cognitive ability, has been receiving an increasing attention from researchers in the last two decades. The focus of the present study is to investigate the effect of critical teaching on learners’ reading comprehension improvement in an EFL context. This study is adapting the infusion approach to the critical thinking theory. This approach is based on the integration of teaching critical thinking skills into the subject-specific classes (in this case English classes). The findings of the study suggest that critical teaching has a positive effect on both learners’ reading comprehension ability and their motivation. The findings are useful to both teachers and learners and could be implemented in teacher training courses, self-learning software, or in computer assisted language learning (CALL).

Afro-Future Females. Black Writers Chart Science F Newest New-Wave Trajectory

Afro-Future Females: Black Writers Chart Science Fiction's Newest New-Wave Trajectory, edited by Marleen S. Barr, is the first combined science fiction critical anthology and short story collection to focus upon black women via written and visual texts. The volume creates a dialogue with existing theories of Afro-Futurism in order to generate fresh ideas about how to apply race to science fiction studies in terms of gender. The contributors, including Hortense Spillers, Samuel R. Delany, Octavia E. Butler, and Steven Barnes, formulate a woman-centered Afro-Futurism by repositioning previously excluded fiction to redefine science fiction as a broader fantastic endeavor. They articulate a platform for scholars to mount a vigorous argument in favor of redefining science fiction to encompass varieties of fantastic writing and, therefore, to include a range of black women's writing that would otherwise be excluded. Afro-Future Females builds upon Barr's previous work in black science fiction and fills a gap in the literature. It is the first critical anthology to address the "blackness" of outer space fiction in terms of feminism, emphasizing that it is necessary to revise the very nature of a genre that has been constructed in such a way as to exclude its new black participants. Black science fiction writers alter genre conventions to change how we read and define science fiction itself. The work's main point: black science fiction is the most exciting lite...

Gary Westfahl A Sense-of-Wonderful Century. Explorations of Science Fiction and Fantasy Films

This book gathers together many of the illuminating essays on science fiction and fantasy film penned by a major critic in the SF field. The pieces are roughly organized in the chronological order of when the movies and television programs being discussed first appeared, with essays providing more general overviews clustered near the beginning and end of the volume, to provide the overall aura of a historical survey. Although this book does not pretend to provide a comprehensive history of science fiction and fantasy films, it does intermingle analyses of films and TV programs with some discussions of related plays, novels, stories, and comic books, particularly in the essays on This Island Earth and 2001: A Space Odyssey and its sequels. Inciteful, entertaining, and full of intelligent and witty observations about science fiction and its sometimes curious relationship with the visual media, these essays will both delight and entertain critics, fans, and viewers alike.

Basil Altaie God, Nature, and the Cause. Essays on Islam Science

The philosophical conflict of religion and science is one of the most compelling and controversial issues today. Many intellectuals, scholars and philosophers from the West representing Christian and Jewish philosophical traditions have addressed this burning question but little has been heard from their counterparts in the Muslim tradition. What do Muslims have to say on the subject, and what is the relationship between modern scientific developments and Muslim belief? What is the Islamic tradition of Kalam, and does it have anything to contribute to modern science and philosophy? These are some of the critical questions addressed by Basil Altaie in his latest book God, Nature, and the Cause: Essays on Islam and Science. Altaie, physicist and philosopher rooted in classical Islamic theology, argues that the Kalam tradition—Islam’s deepest philosophical expression—provides a number of insights that can create a greater understanding of modern physics, and reconcile the apparent clash between science and religion. In this riveting set of essays, Altaie takes us from the early circles of Mu’tazili and Ash’ari Kalam,to the universities of Western Europe, in a critical survey that engages thinkers like Al-Ash’ari, Al-Ghazali, Ibn Sina, Aristotle, Newton, Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Laplace, Schrödinger, and others. This is an unprecedented and fascinating study, available in English for the first time through Kalam Research & Media. This book provides an important resource for...

Angela Ndalianis Science Fiction Experiences

This collection of essays explores how science fiction films and computer games attempt to come to grips with the changing conceptions of the world around us, and our identity within it.This book focuses on developments that have taken place in science fiction media over the last two decades. The central concern is with technology: special effects technology used to create the special effects in media such as films and computer games; and the way the media examples themselves image and thematize the role of new technology within their narratives. This book is concerned especially with exploring a diverse range of experiences that science fiction can offer its audience. Ranging from film examples such as Matrix Reloaded and Avatar to game examples such as Doom 3, one aim is to explore how similar themes of technological advancement in the hands of corporations and governments are conveyed across the different media technologies - the cinema and computer games. In addition, the book explores how film affects technologies and science fiction themes have begun to slip outside the boundaries of science fiction media and have entered the social realm - through 'special effects' that are rudimentary forms of artificial intelligence, through 'real' robots that are becoming a growingindustry, and in the construction of our urban spaces which are deliberately modeled upon utopian images drawn from science fiction."Ndalianis's book promises to be an accessible, e...

Contemporary Science Teaching Approaches. Promoting Conceptual Understanding in

Contemporary science teaching approaches focus on fostering students toconstruct new scientific knowledge as a process of inquiry rather than havingthem act as passive learners memorizing stated scientific facts. Although thisperspective of teaching science is clearly emphasized in the National ResearchCouncil's National Science Education Standards (NRC, 1996), it is howeverchallenging to achieve in the classroom. Science teaching approaches shouldenhance students' conceptual understanding of scientific concepts which can be later utilized by students indeeper recognition of real world (Marsak & Janouskova, 2007). This book identifies and describes severaldifferent contemporary science teaching approaches and presents recent applications of these approaches inpromoting interest among students.
